The Azienda Agricola Marenco was founded in 1925 by Michele Marenco. His son Giuseppe continued the family business. In 1956 he built a cellar, still active today after being renovated and modernized, in which to carry out the winemaking operations. Currently, her three daughters, Michela, with her husband Giovanni and her son Andrea, Doretta and Patrizia, run a winery now consolidated in the world (and not only) and Italian sparkling wine scene.
Marenco is located in Strevi, in the province of Alessandria, where the production of Asti Spumante is concentrated. Part of the 70 hectares of vineyards are also located in the municipalities of Fontanile and Castel Boglione, in the province of Asti, the home of the Barbera grape. Moscato d'Asti or Moscato Bianco, Barbera, Brachetto and Cortese are the vines on which the vast majority of Marenco wines are based, focusing on the enhancement of local products.
In the vineyards of Strevi are cultivated the grapes of Moscato d'Asti or Moscato Bianco at the base of Asti Spumante D.O.C.G. Marenco. Its grapes, cultivated according to the principles of environmental sustainability, are subjected to the classic pressing, then proceed with the decanting, the filtration of the must and the production of bubbles with the method of natural fermentation in autoclave.
Now, let’s get to the tasting!
Asti Spumante D.O.C.G. Marenco is a wine that reveals all the typical traits of this Denomination: a remarkable sweetness and aromatic quality, with a finesse and elegance such as to put it in the elite of D.O.C.G. Asti wines (small clarification: on the label you will find "Asti D.O.C.G.". The production manual allows, for the sparkling version, both the simplified expression "Asti" and the more specific one "Asti Spumante").
On visual examination it is presented in a straw-yellow color, with fascinating golden shades, to remind us of the prestige and value of the product. It immediately reveals a fine, subtle and persistent perlage, just like quality sparkling wines. On the nose, the aromas of Moscato Bianco or Moscato d'Asti are unmistakable. We perceive hints of orange blossom and peach, with background of musk and hints of honey. On the palate it is sweet, balanced and always aromatic. Its fine and elegant effervescence gives overall freshness and pleasantness to the sip.
We place it, of course, at the end of the meal, especially with dry, not creamy or cold, desserts, and with baked cakes. Specifically, among the Christmas sweets, it is perfect with pandoro. Ideal for the toast that concludes a lunch or dinner.
If you are looking for a wine for the upcoming Christmas holidays you should bet on these bubbles!
