Chardonnay Peter Zemmer
Today's review concerns a wine that recently obtained very high scores from the best international guides. James Suckling rated it as an outstanding and exceptional wine, awarding it 91 points. This is the Chardonnay produced by Peter Zemmer, 2022 vintage.
As soon as it arrived in our cellar, we decided to uncork and taste a bottle. Moreover, the excellent evaluation of a great wine critic like James Suckling intrigued us to the point of giving ourselves a glass of this great white wine from Alto Adige.
Our expectations for this label were already high, regardless of the opinion of the experts. Zemmer Peter is one of the most important and renowned producers in Alto Adige and its wines are highly sought after on the world wine market.

Peter Zemmer is one of the oldest family-run wineries in Alto Adige, founded in 1928 by Peter Zemmer, great uncle of the current owner, who has the same name. The winery is located in Cortina Sulla Strada del Vino, in Bolzano, in Trentino Alto Adige. It is one of the smallest municipalities in the area, with just over 600 inhabitants, with a distinctly pleasant character, rich in agricultural land, orchards and vineyards that define the landscape.
Its geographical position, between Alto Adige and Trentino, in the center of the Adige Valley, determines unique pedoclimatic conditions that have made this municipality famous throughout the world for its vocation for viticulture. This area stands out for its excellent exposure to light, the particular microclimate, sometimes mild, corresponding to the vegetative evolution of the vine, and sometimes alpine, favorably influenced by the breezes of the Ora del Garda. Furthermore, the excellent annual distribution of rainfall, receptive and rich soils, of calcareous-dolomitic character, create a great terroir for quality viticulture.
In the range of Peter Zemmer wines, those obtained from international vines prevail. In this area, international vines find an extremely ideal environment to express themselves at their best. Most of the international wines produced are white wines from Chadonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Müller Thurgau grapes. Among the autochthonous white wines there are several excellent versions of Gewürztraminer. Among the red wines, Pinot Noir and, above all, the two autochthonous vine Lagrein and Schiava stand out. In short, all the best that the Alto Adige terroir can offer!
Peter Zemmer's Chardonnay is made with 100% Chardonnay grapes grown in the best vineyards of Cortina sulla Strada del Vino. The winemaking process is characterized by the maceration which is carried out before pressing the grapes, with the aim of bringing out, with greater intensity, the fruity aromas of the grape variety. After pressing, alcoholic fermentation occurs in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 19°C. Before being put on the market, the wine ages in steel.
It's time for tasting.
Chardonnay Alto Adige D.O.C. Peter Zemmer 2022 is a straw yellow wine with slight greenish reflections. On the nose it presents a fresh range of fruity aromas: a typical hint of apple, delicate notes of banana, melon and citrus. The sensation of freshness, already revealed during the olfactory examination, is strengthened on the palate. It is medium-bodied, with a good structure, 13.5% vol., and it has a rather long finish, always fruity.
A perfect wine with important and tasty fish dishes, or with first courses that are not too seasoned. It is also recommended with dishes rich in vegetables and with white meats.
