Custoza Le Vigne di San Pietro

Among the morainic hills in the southern area of Garda Lake, in Veneto, on the border with Lombardy, there is a D.O.C. that has been able to enhance the qualities of its main autochthonous vines, combining them to give shape to white wines immediately recognizable, with a well defined aromatic profile and clear and specific taste traits. We are talking about the D.O.C. "Custoza", which includes 9 municipalities in the province of Verona, including Custoza, the original locality of the D.O.C., in Sommacampagna. One of those Appellations symbol of Italian viticultural biodiversity.

In our online wine sales site we host an excellent label of this Appellation: the Custoza produced by Le Vigne di San Pietro. Here is our review of the 2021 vintage.

Le Vigne di San Pietro is a winery located in the municipality of Sommacampagna, in the province of Verona, near the Garda Lake, whose influence determines an ideal microclimate for viticulture and, more generally, for agricultural practice. The winery’s vineyards cover about 10 hectares, distributed between the San Pietro vineyard, which surrounds the winery’s headquarters, and the Balconi Rossi vineyard, also in Sommacampagna, but detached from the headquarters, which has been part of the estate’s vineyards since the 1990s.

The area is characterized by hilly, clayey-calcareous and morainic soils, very fertile and rich in minerals. Among the aspects that favor the wine making practice, in addition to the mild climate that, as we wrote, is tempered by the proximity of Garda Lake, there is also the location of the vineyards, in the middle of a wonderful park characterized by great biodiversity of tree species that contribute to create a suitable environment.

The varieties cultivated are autochthonous or typical of this area, especially white berried, which constitute the ampelographic basis of Custoza D.O.C. wines: Garganega, Trebbiano, Trebbianello, Manzoni Bianco and Cortese are the white berried grapes cultivated, while among the red grapes there are the vines Corvina, Rondinella, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The Custoza D.O.C. Le Vigne di San Pietro is the winery's flagship white wine, capable of bringing out the qualities of the main white grape varieties of the area. It is obtained from Garganega, Trebbianello, Trebbiano, Cortese and Manzoni Bianco grapes, harvested by hand, destemmed and then pressed. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel tanks for about 10 days at a controlled temperature of 16°C. The wine ages in steel, to preserve the primary aromas of the vines, for 6 months and for 3 months in the bottle.

Let's taste it.

Custoza Le Vigne di San Pietro

The Custoza D.O.C. Le Vigne di San Pietro 2021 is a wine with an intense straw yellow color with light golden reflections. The nose is fragrant and immediate. We perceive a nice mix of floral and fruity scents, especially acacia flowers, apple and pineapple. There are also light vegetal and herbaceous notes. The palate is fresh, with a marked mineral note, savory, pleasant and very drinkable. Structure and body are moderate. The finish is persistent: it recalls the sensations perceived at the olfactory examination to which is added a pleasing bitter aftertaste.

In our opinion, it is a perfect wine for aperitifs or with vegetable dishes.
