Solutions to store opened wine bottle
To store a bottle of wine, opened and still containing wine, keeping its organoleptic characteristics unchanged, just like at the first sip, there are some tricks and solutions that you can easily use. These solutions will allow the liquid to keep its properties longer, although you should not forget that much depends on the characteristics of each wine.
You will need to pay attention to three factors: wine cork, position and temperature.
1. Wine cork
To prevent excessive contact between air and wine, you will necessarily need to re-cork the bottle. The first and simplest solution is to use the same cork. Of course, you will need to be very careful not to damage it during opening, otherwise its airtight capabilities will be significantly reduced and the risk of air infiltration very high. Another solution involves the use of parchment paper to wrap the cork itself and strengthen its sealing, especially if the cork is damaged.
However, there are other more effective solutions. On the market there are specific universal metal stoppers, designed specifically for this situation, which prevent contact between air and liquid, preserving the wine for a few days.
Among the many solutions that we propose there is also to put the advanced wine in a smaller bottle, filling it to the maximum in order to reduce the volume of oxygen in contact with the liquid. Then you should use one of the stoppers we just indicated.
2. Position
You know that the ideal position to store a bottle of wine in the cellar is horizontal: in this way the liquid wets the cork that adheres to the walls, protecting the wine from oxygen.
If the bottle is open, there is another solution. If the quantity of residual wine is small, the ideal position for its storage is vertical. Why? Always to avoid excessive oxidation. You have to consider that a bottle, with a little wine, placed horizontally exposes to oxygen a greater amount of liquid than when it is placed vertically. You can verify what we said with a simple home experiment: take a bottle, not necessarily of wine, and evaluate the volume of liquid in contact with the air in the two positions.
You will have to carefully calculate the residue of nectar in your bottle and, on this basis, choose the ideal solution.
3. Temperature
The third factor to consider to keep a bottle of uncorked wine and not yet finished is the temperature. You will need to store it in a suitable place, but especially at a certain temperature.
Keep it away from bright or warm sources, which can lead to deterioration. Instead, put it in a cool, dark place, with a standard temperature around 14-15 standard, but also slightly lower. This recommendation is valid for any wine, especially for white, sparkling and rose wines to be drunk in a short time, but it is also valid for red wines of any type.
Cork, position and temperature: to keep your open bottle in the best way you will have to pay attention to these aspects and follow our advice. And the next meal or the following days you can definitely enjoy the same wine.
