Torgiano Riserva D.O.C.G. "Rubesco" Vigna Monticchio Lungarotti

Lungarotti means Torgiano and Torgiano wines. Few other wineries have played such an important role in determining the recognition and the success of a local Denomination. Lungarotti has made a decisive contribution to the creation of two of the main Denominations of Umbria: the D.O.C. Torgiano, especially in the "red" version, and the D.O.C.G. Torgiano Rosso Riserva.

Rubesco, from the Latin "rubescere", that is "to blush", is the name chosen by the winery for its Torgiano red wine, both in the basic version and in the Riserva version. The first wine, produced since the 60s, was a true pioneer of the D.O.C. Torgiano, while the second is considered one of the best red wines of Umbria and Italy.

We tasted and reviewed the Torgiano Riserva D.O.C.G. "Rubesco" Vigna Monticchio Lungarotti 2017.

Lungarotti is a family-run winery, based in Torgiano, in the province of Perugia, founded by Giorgio Lungarotti, one of the major representatives of modern Italian enology, in 1962, joining the various estates of the family, already engaged in winemaking since the eighteenth century. Rubesco was born in 1962 and Rubesco Riserva in 1964. The production of these wines and their quality led to the recognition of the D.O.C. Torgiano, in 1968. Between the 70s and 80s Lungarotti wines were established in national and international markets, while in 1990 the D.O.C.G. Torgiano Riserva was born, the first D.O.C.G. of Umbria, of which Rubesco Vigna Monticchio is the leading exponent.

Over the years, the winery has experienced a process of renewal, expansion of possessions, continuous innovation and adoption of the principles of environmental sustainability. The winery is led by Chiara Lungarotti, Maria Grazia and Teresa, with their sons Francesco and Gemma.

The wine production of Lungarotti is developed in two estates located in the most suitable areas of the two Umbrian D.O.C.G.: Torgiano and Montefalco, in the province of Perugia. The latter is the preferred land for the production of wines of D.O.C.G. Montefalco Sagrantino. For this reason, in the wide range of Lungarotti wines we find the main wines of Umbria.

We go into the specific of the Torgiano Riserva D.O.C.G. "Rubesco" Vigna Monticchio Lungarotti. This wine is produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, harvested in the last decade of September. The "Vigna Monticchio" is a cru located on the hill of Brufa, in the northern area of Torgiano, 300 meters above sea level, well exposed and with clay/sandy soils. Vinification involves fermentation in steel, at controlled temperature, with its maceration on the skins for 25-28 days. The wine then rests and ages in oak barrels for about 1 year and 3 years in the bottle.

Let’s move on to the description of the organoleptic characteristics of the 2017 vintage, awarded with 93 Falstaff points, 93 James Suckling points and 98 Doctor Wine points.

Torgiano Riserva D.O.C.G. "Rubesco" Vigna Monticchio Lungarotti

Torgiano Riserva D.O.C.G. "Rubesco" Vigna Monticchio Lungarotti 2017 has a vigorous ruby red color, which anticipates the intensity of the olfactory and gustatory sensations. The nose is rich and varied: we perceive hints of cherry and blackberry, small red fruits, floral notes of violet and spicy sensations in which licorice and cinnamon stand out. The taste is muscular and powerful, with excellent alcohol content (14% vol.) and with a strong personality. The tannins are evident, very soft and velvety, for this reason pleasing and elegant, also thanks to a mineral background. The wine is persistent, fruity and sometimes balsamic. For complexity, nuances and richness of details we classify it among the best red wines we have been lucky enough to taste.

It is a wine that prefers important meat dishes, spicy dishes or mature cheeses. We also recommend a glass outside meals to appreciate its organoleptic qualities.
