Among the major producers of Sangiovese in the area of Montepulciano, where it is called Prugnolo Gentile, we must include the Poliziano winery of Carletti family. The famous Asinone, a cru of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G., is its top wine, the result of a careful selection, after years and years of studies, of the best vineyard for the cultivation of the main vine of Montepulciano.

Selection is the keyword. From the vineyard to the grapes, each element has been carefully selected to obtain the highest quality of the final product. A goal that has been achieved! Taste this label and you will discover its greatness.

Poliziano is a modern winery established in 1961 by Dino Carletti, after having purchased 22 hectares of land in Montepulciano, in the province of Siena. Dino chose the name Poliziano because this adjective is used as a synonym for "native of Montepulciano", from the Latin name of the city: Mons Politianus. The winery logo shows Angelo Ambrogini, poet of Montepulciano, known as Poliziano. All these references and curiosities reveal us the winery’s mission, to enhance the autochthonous vines and wines, and the strong link with the territory.

At the end of the seventies, Dino’s son, Federico Carletti, took over the management of the family business, starting a project to expand the property and to modernize and to develop the business. New lands were acquired, up to the current 170 hectares of vineyards, distributed among the estates of Montepulciano, Montefollonico, Maremma and Cortona; in-depth studies were carried out on the Sangiovese vine; other local and international varieties were introduced, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, to be used to enrich Sangiovese or to produce pure wines; finally, two crus were identified, "Asinone" and "Le Caggiole" in Montepulciano, where Sangiovese meets favourable conditions. From these two crus come the most important Nobile di Montepulciano wines by Poliziano.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. "Asinone" Poliziano is made mainly from Sangiovese grapes, grown in the vineyard called Asinone, in Montepulciano, with an extension of 12 hectares and at an altitude between 380 and 400 m. above sea level. It stands out for its ideal microclimate and for its clayey soil, rich in skeleton, magnesium and potassium. The name Asinone is the one traditionally used to indicate this vineyard, a reference to its shape which resembles the back of a donkey ("asino" in Italian).

The Sangiovese grapes grown here have limited dimensions and a great concentration and fullness, which allows them to express all their potential during winemaking. The grapes are harvested strictly by hand and are carefully selected first in the vineyard and then in the cellar. Fermentation with maceration takes place in steel at a controlled temperature, while aging takes place in French oak for a period of between 16 and 18 months.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. "Asinone" Poliziano

The first edition of the wine dates back to 1983. Let's go to the tasting of the 2019 vintage.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. "Asinone" Poliziano 2019 has an intense and dark ruby red color, with garnet reflections. The bouquet of perfumes is, as we expected, varied and complex: we perceived fruity notes of black cherry, floral hints of violet, vegetal sensations and light spicy and ethereal hints of wood and tobacco. On the palate it is full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, thanks to very soft and elegant tannins. The finish is characterized by persistence, always fine and ethereal. The aging potential is boundless!

It is a wine for special occasions. To be served with second courses of thick meat or with mature cheeses. For value and quality, we also suggest it as a meditation wine.

Did you know the Asinone by Poliziano? Have you ever tasted it? What do you think?
