This wine comes from a single vineyard in the Castel Ringberg estate above the famous Lake of Kaltern (Lago di Caldaro) at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level. The vines are planted on a south facing hillside where the soils are inter-glacial in origin consisting of calcareous clay. The making process foresees a must fermentation for approximately 15 days followed by acid degradation in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards a 24 months maturation in new French barriques takes place, followed by a long maturation in bottle. It has a deep dark garnet color, intense bouquet of berry fruit with a hint of smoke and chocolate. It shows a very nice interplay between soft tannins and fruit on the palate. It is harmonic and long on the finish. Contains sulphites. Produced by ELENA WALCH SRL - Via Andreas Hofer, 1 - 39040, Tramin/Termeno - Alto Adige - Italy.
The producer
Elena Walch is in charge of a company with vineyards that can be undoubtedly considered among the most beautiful in Alto Adige. The company is located in the former Jesuit monastery, owned by the Walch family since 1869, in Termeno (a small village 30 km from Bolzano). The town of Termeno is well known for its white wines, but especially for its Gewürztraminer (which is said to be born in this place). The estates of Elena Walch overlook Lake Caldaro and are divided into Castel Ringberg and Kastelaz. Their beautiful location is a major contributor to the high quality of the wines produced here.
